Get to wear one of those pirate eye patches??

Posted on Friday 17 April 2009

Some of you who know me well know that I’m a die hard baseball fan and I have always played in amateur leagues all these years.

A few days ago, I took a bad hop off a grounder right into my eye and fractured my eye socket bone.
That got me scared quite a bit because without an eye, what would artists do? My panicked brain managed to think that I at least get to wear one of those cool Captain Hook eye patches.

A doctor initially suggested surgery but in the end, I avoided it after thorough evaluations and it seems like I’ll get my eye ball back eventually. It was a big scare but seems like it is going to be OK.

One of my painting instructors lost one of his eyes and shifted his medium from oil to watercolor because he saw less dimensional space and more graphic shapes. His art was quite amazing that way. It was an unfortunate tragedy that he lost his eye but he made the most out of it.

Anyhow, since I’m no use at work with my eye area swollen up like a mini balloon, I’m staying home. But I feel fine. I am a bit bored and thought I’d share this horrible story on my blog.. ๐Ÿ™‚

A few more in progress images from my kids book. All the stars in the BG are silver flakes. Do they look like stars??

kani-san kani-san…

Holy crap Dice! Be careful with your eyes! I really love the subtle blue shapes in the background, they add a nice sense of depth and mystery.

I’ve got a crush on the chibi kani!
Good luck with your eye, what a horrible story (but yes, the eye patch definitely sounds cool!). I broke my nose after a month playing baseball and stopped paying 6 years later when I broke my hand. Definitely not as dramatic as your eye though!
All the best to you! Heal fast!

Hi Dice, Your paintings look great, and you’ll probably start a fashion trend with an eye patch. I think a lot of artists are visual ‘cripples’ of a sort, so you are in good company. Get well soon.

    April 19, 2009 | 10:17 pm

wow Dice!! so scary about your eye and bones.. I so hope you heal completely and fast. I used comfrey when my neck was healing, the native americans called the herb “bone-knit”, I do think it really helped in healing my break.. so I’m playing softball with the team at work now! Pitching with no injuries at all like yours (knock on wood) but a huge bruise from a line drive to my thigh the other day.. it’s in quite a colorful state at the moment.. but that’s my fear, one to the face.. i feel for you, and am glad that the prognosis is good. So rest up and take the time to heal.
And yes!! the stars are just lovely they have so much depth!

    April 20, 2009 | 1:18 am

    April 20, 2009 | 7:53 am

Sorry to hear about this scare you’ve had. I blew out my knee while I was in school and had to quit for a semester, that’s as close as I’ve come to this kind of disaster. Not really as scary as losing an eye for sure. I’m glad it wasn’t catastrophic in the end. I hope you heal soon Dice. Take care.

Thank you Bill! Some nice drawings on your blog!

Thank you JP! Wow! Ardman trained director! You must be great! I love their stuff.
Your blog drawings are absolutely charming!

    thanks man!

I know about your eye condition too. So I knew my accident wouldn’t be an excuse not to aim to be a great artist like you!
I’m really excited to be in your class.

Thanks Fawn!! I know! Now I’m paranoid about my eye everywhere I go!

Thanks Wootie! Haven’t heard from you. Hope you are well!!! Don’t be a stranger!

Are you and Bobby will be in San Diego this year?

I know! I thought of you when this happened to me.
Fortunately, mine wasn’t as serioius as yours. Softball is probably more dangerous because the pitcher is so close. I think quite a few amateur players still die each year playing softball. Make sure you get the training from Alena! ๐Ÿ™‚

What are you talking about? I already look like that Saga guy in the street fighter.
My book is pretty much done! It’s coming out in August in japan!

    Merci bouque!

    Thanks man!
How is Seattle? Are you working with Moby? Tell him I said hi!
