Last Weekend for Pixar Show in Oakland

Posted on Thursday 6 January 2011

This coming weekend will be the last weekend of the Art of Pixar show at Oakland Museum of Art. This is a big show of concept artwork done for all the Pixar films from Toy Story up to Toy Story 3. This show started at Museum of Modern Art in NY back in 2005 which shocked the art world. How can concept art done for cartoons belong to such a prestigious museum like MOMA?? Despite some outraged art critiques, the show was well received by the public and went around world in the next 5 years and eventually came back to Oakland, studio’s neighborhood.

I remember back in 2005, I was still at Blue Sky Studios. Some guys at Blue Sky made a proposal to have Art of Blue Sky show at a local community center in a small town of White Plains, NY. The idea was shot down by their parent company probably because it didn’t seem like something that would profit the company. A few months later, Pixar show opened up at New York MOMA. It was such a slap on the face. “HOW DARE YOU PIXAR!? OPENING A BIG SHOW IN OUR OWN TURF??? I HATE YOU”

I was simply jealous, of course. And I was so impressed by their show. Not just the quality of artwork, but the care and respect for their concept artwork which seemed to be foreign in the CG animation business.

5 years later, I was lucky enough to be included in the very show. I mean… it’s a really nice museum.
But the show looks even better than the one in NY, I think. Not because there has my work in it of course, but it is really well curated. If you haven’t already, I highly recommend going to check it out.

I’m a little embarrassed to have my painting at the entrance…. a very strange feeling….

I went to the Pixar exhibition TWICE, and it was all very beautiful. Your work was gorgeous, Mr. Tsutsumi. I hope to be as great of an artist as you one day. 🙂

Dice, I’ve seen your work for some time now and as I have the book “The Art of Toy Story” I was amazed by the way you painted. I like your style very, very much. I’m new to digital painting, but you’re are definitively a source of inspiration.

    Best regards,
    Luis.
