Phew, I thought I would not be too busy at work anymore since my main duty on Toy Story 3 was over but in the past 3 weeks, I’m back on it full time to help some issues we’ve been having! Late nights and weekends back again… It’s almost there though..
Anyhow, I recently was asked by the family of Joe Hisaishi to do an illustration to celebrate his recent achievement in Japan. He was awarded with a Medal of Honour with purple ribbon by the Government of Japan for his life time achievement as one of the most respected composers in the history. This illustration will be used on several thank you gift packages his Family has put together.
For those who don’t know him, he is most famous for his amazing music he created for every film Hayao Miyazaki directed. He’s also done tons of other films including last year’s Oscar winning “Departures.”

you don’t know how excited I was to get this job. Hisaishi is by far my favorite film music composer and I grew up with his music along with Miyazaki’s animations.

wow!! that is really beautiful, Dice! and congrats!
All the best with Toy Story 3. really looking forward to it.
This is exciting Dice. Congratulations! This is certainly a momentous portrait for an equally momentous composer.
A tribute from a Genius to another genius. He has the sound, you have the light. I like the way you added movment. Great Job !
WOW. Joe Hisaishi is also my favorite composer. You did beautifully! How cool.
This is amazing Dice! I love the implied movement and the gentle portrait of Hisaishi. It is definitely something that you can be very proud of…. not that you don’t have enough of those! Congrats.

Dice, that’ s awesome! I love it…
What an honor. It captures a feeling of his music quite well.
wow-! That’s wonderful DIce san
I absolutely love Joe Hisaishi’s music and I think you captured him amazingly. Love the slight rainbow color that looks like the reflection in the light.
His music always makes me feel nostalgic…
Hi Dice! What a beautiful composition!! And the movement and the light are amazing… I’m just wondering which technique did you use?? anyway, it looks wonderful!!
Really wonderful Dice. Bravo!

Dice,
You really captured his essence. I am imagining his music in my head by looking at your piece. The Miyazaki soundtracks like Laputa and Beat’s “Brother” soundtrack are my favorite.
Hope to bump into you soon.

Nostalgic.. yeah, I think his music always has that Japanese authenticity to it somehow though he always deals with European themes.
–Tatiana
Gracias! This is completely digital.
I have used this watercolor texture to add some organic quality but it’s mainly on photoshop. I wish I had the time to do this traditionally!
–Eli
